Your tears are made inside your eyelids and are water with a little bit of salt - which is why they taste salty!  When you cry, tears wash away small particles like dust and any bacteria that may be trying to invade your eyes.  Tears also have antibodies that fight bad bacteria to help keep your eyes healthy.
